A New Year’s Eve that went in a different direction
This sweet little true life story is an example of how Spirit works in our lives — if we are willing to allow it. It is my re-telling of a story written by Harold Klemp, leader of Eckankar, and the story was submitted by the women who feature in the story — both students of Eckankar.
Some time in the past before Google maps and mobile phones:
Two women were at home one New Year’s Eve and wanting to go to a party. They asked Spirit to organise that for them, if it would be in the best interests of all concerned. Soon afterwards, the phone rang and, sure enough, someone was inviting them to a party.
They took down the directions and headed out of town a little way. They were so excited and chatting about how their request had been so quickly answered that they took a wrong turn. Shortly after that, their car broke down. There they were in the back blocks, no idea of their whereabouts, and the only thing they could see was a house, but it was all in darkness. They had no alternative — so they bravely ventured into the garden and knocked on the front door. An elderly gentleman answered the door and invited them in.
They found out that he was sitting in the dark because his wife of so many years had died only a few months before and he had no-one to celebrate with. They both realised that Spirit (also known as the ECK, though you may prefer to call it by another name, or even the Universe) had engineered this so that they could keep him company. They talked to him about how his wife would be on another plane now, and perfectly happy, and chatted about various other things. The man, now happy himself, suggested he phone his son, who was a motor mechanic, and lived nearby. The son drove them home and the very next day fixed their car for a reasonable price.
