Somewhere deep in my being, any hint of loss of freedom rings bells, crashes symbols and beats a big base drum.
I have no idea why I get this cacophony, but freedom is ‘a biggie’ for me. You too?
What do you think of these two quotes?
“I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.” – Evelyn Beatrice Hall (mistakenly attributed to Voltaire, with whom she'd worked)
“Do all you have agreed to do. Do not encroach on other persons or their property.” – Richard Maybury. His two laws were the result of in-depth and wide-ranging research, and were published in his book, ‘Whatever Happened to Justice’.
Don’t you love the fact that someone could hate what another person wrote and yet defend their right to say it?
And, as far as Maybury’s two laws, if they were enacted by everyone, then we’d all have freedom, don't you think?
I so want everyone to have that freedom.
I see that Aspies in particular, not feeling totally accepted by society, get stuck in an unfulfilling life, bearing a stigma that inhibits their creativity, freedom, and potential.
They don't feel worthy or enough because they are different. Some people insist on curing them, but they cannot be cured. They simply have a difference in approach due to their different brain wiring. So they don’t feel thoroughly safe in the neurotypical world.
However, if allowed to act freely and without censure, some will go on to change the world, e.g., Steve Jobs. (For more from Steve Jobs, see the blog about why the world needs Aspies. It’s in a list of blogs on this very page.)
We're all – neurodiverse and neurotypical – valuable and unique; we're all on a journey of discovery.
If neurodiverse people would learn to value their differences and know they are enough, they’d be empowered and understand that they belong. The world would be shinier and inclusive. That’s what I’m working for anyway.
Freedom is such an enormous topic, and I have a whole week dealing with freedom in my course – more details here. https://www.spiritualonthespectrum.com/
In the meantime, here are a few ‘meme’ cards that may be relevant and useful for you.
