Angel job description: They are assistants to the big G (the Godforce, by whatever name you wish to use). They get to help humans, but they must be asked. If they were to act before being asked, they'd be interfering with our free will. 

They understand human foibles and likely stumbling blocks: Previous course participants are all struck by the ease with which they can communicate with the angels, and the friendship bond that quickly develops. Past participants have also commented that the angels have a sense of humour. 

I know! It's a bit hard to swallow, isn't it? I mean most of us were brought up thinking angels were glorious winged creatures who were pretty magical and not very down-to-earth.
