Why do I still use the name Asperger?
BY ELIZABETH JEWELL STEPHENS
Some people object to the use of the word Asperger’s or even Aspies because it has been shown in recent years that Dr Asperger took some reprehensible actions under the Nazi regime. Steve Silberman has interesting data to add to that.
I also acknowledge that the American Psychiatric Association now classes all Asperger’s people as on the Autism Spectrum.
It seems to me that the easier way to classify those of us who are high functioning is with our own name for it, and also it’s an easy way to pinpoint who we are talking about.
Whatever the case, before judging anyone, I like to try to walk in their shoes. If Asperger was not actually squeaky clean, the closest I can come to understanding why he may have acted like he did is to think of all the people who have had to go against their beliefs regarding Covid-19 vaccination, simply to keep themselves in a job. We might say they should have put their beliefs before their fears, but have we walked in their shoes?
However, it’s your choice, and whether you wish to wipe his memory off the slate or not, there’s so much sense in what Prof Attwood writes below.
Also, it's been shown that people with Asperger's are not usually diagnosed until about the age of 11, whereas those who are truly on the Autism Spectrum, are diagnosed by the age of five. Also, members of the latter group tend to have an unusual gait. There are other differences in mental abilities too.
So I’m using Aspies and Asperger’s.
“A personal perspective of Asperger’s syndrome
by Dr Tony Attwood
"From my clinical experience, I consider that children and adults with Asperger’s syndrome have a different, not necessarily defective, way of perceiving, thinking, learning and relating. The person usually has a strong desire to seek knowledge, truth and perfection, with a different set of priorities than would be expected with other people. The overriding priority may be to solve a problem rather than satisfy the social or emotional needs of others. The person values being creative rather than co-operative, and may perceive patterns, errors and solutions that are not apparent to others. The person is usually renowned for speaking their mind and being honest and determined, with a strong sense of social justice and a distinct sense of humour."
